Mtskheta-Mtianeti: from the ancient capital to the highlands

It is most convenient to imagine Mtskheta-Mtianeti not as a “road to Kazbegi”, but as a vertical. Below is the ancient capital of Mtskheta and the Aragvi valley, above Ananuri and Gudauri, then highland Khevi, and then inaccessible Pshavi and Khevsureti. In just a few days you can go from medieval temples to the real Caucasus.

It all starts twenty kilometers from Tbilisi. The region includes four municipalities - Mtskheta, Dusheti, Tianeti and Kazbegi - and according to the final 2024 census data, there are 94,039 people living in it, of which about 76% are in rural areas. This is the main characteristic: outside of Mtskheta, urban Georgia ends quickly.

Mtskheta: a UNESCO site half an hour from the capital

The city stands at the confluence of the Kura and Aragvi. Here was the capital of Kartli, and here in the 4th century Christianity became the state religion. The historical monuments of Mtskheta have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1994 - the site includes three monuments: Jvari, Svetitskhoveli and Samtavro.

Svetitskhoveliis the main temple of historical Mtskheta. The current cathedral was built in the 11th century on the site of earlier buildings and is considered one of the important examples of medieval architecture in the Caucasus. It is better not to limit yourself to a quick inspection of the facade here: Mtskheta is revealed through details - carvings, masonry, frescoes, urban planning.Jvaristands on a hill above the city, from where the same view of the confluence of rivers opens up. The current church dates back to the 6th century.

For the first acquaintance, the logical sequence is Jvari, then the city and Svetitskhoveli: first you see the landscape, then you descend into it.

Ananuri and Aragvi Valley

If you drive north from Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Road, the next major stop isAnanuriabove the Zhinvali Reservoir. The fortress complex is associated with the feudal Aragvi family; the surviving buildings date mainly from the 14th–18th centuries: walls, towers, churches, and a bell tower. There are places for rest and picnic near the reservoir.

Ananuri is good precisely because it does not require a separate trip - it lies directly on the route to Kazbegi.

Then the road goes along the reservoir and along the Aragvi valley. There are several Aragvi in the region: Mtiuleti, Gudamakar, Khevsur and Pshav, and their valleys form a significant part of the landscape of northeastern Georgia. For a traveler, this means many side routes - it is not necessary to immediately go to distant Khevsureti; already in the Dusheti region there is somewhere to turn.

Gudauri and StepantsmindaGudauriis the largest winter center in the region and one of the main ski resorts in the country. In summer, it does not turn into an empty stop: high-mountain landscapes, proximity to passes and accessibility of routes make the area interesting even out of season. The route Tbilisi - Gudauri - Stepantsminda operates all year round, but the program is completely different.Stepantsmindais the main tourist center of the high mountain Khevi. The name “Kazbegi” is widely used today: it is the name of the municipality, the mountainous region, and the entire tourist cluster, but the historical name of the city is Stepantsminda.

The main symbol of the place is Mount Kazbek, also known as Mkinvartsveri. Georgia Travel lists the altitude as 5,054 meters; Some sources give slightly lower values, around 5033–5047.

Gergeti Trinity Church

One of Georgia's most recognizable views: a 14th-century church high above Stepantsminda with Kazbek in the background.

A practical note that is usually not warned about:this shot is not guaranteed.High altitude weather changes quickly and the summit is often obscured by clouds. You shouldn’t base your entire trip around one photo.

Kazbegi National Park

About 35% of the park's territory is covered with forests, and 1,347 plant species have been recorded, of which 26% are endemic. The rest is alpine meadows, snowy peaks and rocks.

Main natural destinations: Truso, Daryal Gorge, Gveleti waterfalls, Khada and Sno valleys, Juta and the Chaukhi massif. This is the territory where urban sneakers stop being a good idea.

Juta and Chaukhi: the best option for hikingJutais a small mountain village at about 2200 meters, where the popular route to the Chaukhi massif begins.

Important for beginners: it is not necessary to conquer the peaks. From Juta there is a relatively simple walking route about four kilometers long to the foot of Chaukhi, it takes about an hour and a half. That is, you can spend a day at altitude, walk part of the way, take a break and return to the village - without a multi-day hike.Juta - Chaukhi pass - Abudelauri lakes - Roshka- that's another story. The route connects Kazbegi with Khevsureti, and the official tourism resource recommends June and July for it. You need normal equipment and a willingness to go through the pass: the “get out of the car for an hour” format does not work here.

For ascents to the peaks of the Chaukhi massif, Georgia Travel directly indicates that professional support is mandatory.

Khevi, Pshavi and Khevsureti

The modern administrative region unites territories with different histories and cultures, and this is worth understanding.Khevi- the area around Stepantsminda and the upper reaches of the Terek: Kazbek, Daryal, Gergeti, Truso, Juta.Pshavilies to the east, along the Pshavskaya Aragvi. Today it is an area of natural and cultural tourism with small mountain settlements and traditional architecture.Khevsuretiis one of the most remote and original regions of Georgia: Shatili, Mutso, Arkhoti, Roshka. A separate culture with tower architecture and fortified settlements has historically developed here.Shatiliis a fortified settlement on the Arguni River, where medieval towers and residential buildings form a single complex on the slope. NearbyMutsois another complex of tower architecture. Both require more time than the usual departure from Tbilisi: the road to Khevsureti is itself part of the journey.

If you don’t want to travel that far,Truso- a high-mountain valley with mineral springs, travertines and fortresses - andDaryal Gorgeon the northern border are more accessible.

Tianeti: quiet part of the region

Not all of Mtskheta-Mtianeti is a route to Kazbegi. If you turn towards Tianeti, you find yourself in a quiet part: the Zion Reservoir, and the road from Tbilisi goes through the Sabadur Forest, which is especially beautiful in winter under the snow. A good option for a second acquaintance with the region, when Mtskheta and Kazbegi are already behind.

What to try

The cuisine here changes with the altitude. In Pshavi and Khevsureti, different versions of khinkali are known - meat, cheese, potato, local cheeses, meat dishes and homemade bread.

We should also mentiondambalhacho- a fermented blue cheese originally from Pshavi, which is kept in clay pots for at least two months and eaten melted with melted butter. In 2014, the National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage assigned the technology of its production the status of anintangible monument of Georgia. A clarification is not superfluous: on the Internet this cheese is often called a UNESCO heritage - this is not so, the status is national.

In the lowland part of the region, the cuisine is closer to common Georgian.

What to take to the mountains

For a mountain trip, the most practical foods are those that do not require cooking: cheese, bread, nuts, dried fruits, honey. Of what you can collect in Tbilisi on the eve of departure, the best works are churchkhela with walnuts - essentially a ready-made energy bar - and honey.

Equipment depends on how high you're going:One-day trip - Mtskheta, Ananuri, Stepantsminda.Thermos and power bank: the connection on the road disappears, and the navigation quickly drains the phone.Walk in Jute or Sno Valley.Add thick raincoat and thermal underwear - at 2200 meters it is noticeably colder than in Tbilisi, even in summer.Overnight in the mountains.Tent, sleeping bag for three seasons, mat and gas cylinder. The entire list is in the section "Tourism Goods".

For camping, check the specific valley and season: for Juta, the official resource indicates the period from June to the end of September.

When to go

-spring- Mtskheta, monasteries, Ananuri, lower valleys;
-June–July– high-mountain hiking, Juta, transition to Abudelauri;
-August–September— mountain routes and camping in Kazbegi;
-autumn- Mtskheta, Ananuri, forests, cultural routes;
-winter- Gudauri, snowy landscapes, Mtskheta and low mountains.

How many days to layOne day.Tbilisi → Mtskheta → Jvari → Ananuri → Tbilisi. Cultural and historical route without high mountains.Two days.Day one - Mtskheta, Ananuri, Gudauri, overnight in Stepantsminda. Day two - Gergeti, then the Sno or Juta valley, return.Three to four days.Add Truso, Gveleti, Juta and longer routes in the Chaukhi area.Separate trip.Khevsureti, Shatili, Mutso and the transition Juta - Roshka require their own route. It will not be possible to squeeze them between Mtskheta and Kazbegi.

Four things to understand in advance:

1.The height is felt.Stepantsminda and especially Juta have different conditions than in Tbilisi, and even a simple route is more difficult.
2.The weather changes quickly.The sun in the morning does not promise anything in the evening.
3.Not every route is independent.Crossing passes and mountaineering routes require experience, and some are officially recommended to be done with a guide.
4.After Ananuri, the route is more important than the schedule.Turning a trip to the mountains into an ordinary car excursion will not work.

Briefly

  1. Mtskheta and Jvari are a UNESCO site half an hour from Tbilisi, one day is enough for them.
  2. Ananuri is the best stop on the way to the north; it does not require a separate trip.
  3. Juta gives you mountains without a multi-day hike: four kilometers to the foot of Chaukhi.
  4. The shot “Gergeti with Kazbek in the background” is not guaranteed - clouds often cover the peak.
  5. Dambalhacho is a heritage of Georgia, not UNESCO; This is a common mistake.
